Museum of the Moving Image Visit

The visit to the Museum of the Moving Image was a refreshing experience considering we were able to view and interact with some of the oldest media inventions and go through a tour of the history of media and film. The museum presents the history of all media: from zoetrope, thaumatrope, and the kinetograph to historic film and television cameras, projectors, television sets, and sound recording equipment. It also presents newer forms of media through computer-based interactive experiences such as: creating stop motion animation, partaking in a sound recording booth, and so on. The one piece of artwork that caught my attention was the Feral Fount by Gregory Barsamian, which is a stroboscopic zoetrope using 97 rotating sculptures that creates a short animation. I was not aware of how zoetropes worked before I saw this amazing piece in person, that shows how the strobe light can distort our vision and create the illusion of the objects in animation. Besides the individual pieces of artwork, the museum in general shows how the advancement in technology changed media production. For example in the past contraptions and prosthetics like the bust of Natalie Portman in Black Swan were used in order to create the illusion of what we can now create with CGI, our advanced technology. I was also able to create Stop-Motion Animation with the computer-based interactive experiences that they have set up. With just a click of a couple buttons you can create a whole stop-motion animation movie in just a few minutes. The Museum of the Moving Image was amazing to experience because you get to encounter the past of media and film and you get to interact with the future of media and film all in one day.
